Undergraduate Research Funding

Summer Research Fellowships for any combination of student stipend, supplies, or research-associated travel not to exceed $4,000 per student. Research project must not be for a college course credit. Applications open mid-April and reviewed on a rolling bass until funds are depleted.
A UGR Student Summer Research Fellowship can fund any combination of student stipend, supplies, or research-related travel. Fellowship projects must be research or scholarly in nature.
Students may assist Wartburg faculty in an ongoing project or engage in a student-initiated project with Wartburg faculty guidance. Projects should be of such a quality as to be considered for publication or presentation either in the discipline or in undergraduate research journals and/or conferences. Please email the Dr. Shawn Ellerbroek, Director of UGR, (shawn.ellerbroek@wartburg.edu) any questions regarding project eligibility.
Please read the following before applying:
1. Full-time students currently enrolled at Wartburg and returning to campus in the Fall are eligible.
2. Students receiving college course credit for the proposed research are NOT eligible.
3. Request can include any combination of supplies, equipment, or travel for research-associated activity.
4. Summer Research Fellowships are capped at $4,000 per student.
5. Stipends will be paid at an hourly rate of $11.50
6. Must be sponsored/advised by fulltime or emeriti Wartburg faculty. Requires email of support from sponsor/advisor to the Director of UGR.
7. If IRB or IACUC committee approval of project is required, proof of successful project submission to the committee is necessary before review of application. Email submitted form to the Director of UGR. In such cases, release of Summer Research Fellowship funds is contingent on IRB or IACUC project approval.
8. Summer Fellowship Deadline: Mid-April (see campus announcement) then rolling thereafter until funds depleted.
9. If you are working on a group project, submit one application for the entire group.
10. Award decision within 2 weeks of application date.
11. You will need to present a RICE day poster or submit a written report of results to The Director of UGR (shawn.ellerbroek@wartburg.edu) before the next May term.
Academic Year Research Stipend for up to $1,000 per student. Student(s) may also apply separately for Student Research Grants (below). Research must not be for college course credit.

Up to $800 per student for presenting a paper ot poster. Can be used for all travel, lodging, meals, and conference registration.
A UGR Student Conference Travel Award can help cover travel costs associated with student presentations of their research or scholarship project at a conference.

- Full-time students currently enrolled at Wartburg are eligible.
- Students attending a conference after graduation are NOT eligible.
- Student(s) must present their own original work at the conference.
- Award can cover the costs of attending conferences, such as registration, mileage, airfare, or meals.
- Award is capped at $800 per student.
- Proof of student acceptance to present by conference organizers is required before the submitted application will be reviewed. Please send proof directly to the Director of Undergraduate Research (shawn.ellerbroek@wartburg.edu).
- Deadline: rolling until funds are depleted.
- If you are working on a group project, submit one application for the entire group.
- Award decision within 2 weeks of application date.
$350 per student for maximum of $1,050 per project for research projects in a credit course. Projects not related to a credit course may apply for up to $1,050.
A UGR Student Grant can provide supply funds or associated travel costs to undertake a research or scholarly in nature project.
Students may assist Wartburg faculty in an ongoing project or engage in a student-initiated project with Wartburg faculty guidance. Projects should be of such a quality as to be considered for publication or presentation either in the discipline or in undergraduate research journals and/or conferences. - If IRB or IACUC committee approval of project is required, proof of successful project submission to the committee is necessary before review of the application. Funds in this category support mentoring faculty member(s) travel expenses to accompany students presenting research at a meeting or conference. The request may not exceed $700. This is a separate grant from Faculty Development Funds.
A UGR Faculty Conference Travel Award can help cover the travel costs of a faculty member who will be accompanying a student(s) presenting at a conference.
Please read the following before applying:
- Full-time or Emeriti faculty are eligible.
- Faculty cannot simultaneously apply for Faculty Development Fund(s) for the same conference presentation.
- The award can cover the costs of attending conference, such as registration, mileage, airfare, or meals.
- The award is capped at $700 per faculty member.
- Proof of student acceptance to present is required before the submitted application will be reviewed. Please send proof directly to the Director of Undergraduate Research (shawn.ellerbroek@wartburg.edu).
- Deadline: rolling until funds are depleted.
- Award decision within 2 weeks of application date.
American Society of Mammalogists
Grants of up to $1,500 to advanced undergraduates to study mammals. Must be a member of the ASM at the time of application. Deadline: March 1.
American Society of Plant Biologists
ASPB Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships. $4,000 stipend for research between second and third years with a ASPB faculty mentor. Deadline: February of each year.
Beta Beta Beta. Research Grant Award
Grants of $500 to support research conducted by Tri-Beta student members. Deadline in September of each year.
Botanical Society of America
BBSA Undergraduate Student Research Awards. To support research with a research advisor who is a BSA member. Deadline: March 15.
Council on Undergraduate Research
CUR Biology Division Student Travel Award (up to $250) and Social Sciences Division Student Travel Award (up to $200).
Iowa Science Foundation (ISF)
The ISF is a state-supported grant program administered by the Iowa Academy of Science which awards $40,000 in grants each year in three areas: improving public understanding of science, improving science teaching, direct support for scientific research. Deadline End of January.
National Geographic Society. Young Explorers Grants (ages 18-25)
Grants of $2,000 to $5,000. Deadline: at least 8 months prior to beginning of project.
Psi Chi
Psi Chi/APS Undergraduate Research Grants ($1,500) and Summer Research Grants ($5,000). Must be a member of Psi Chi and work with an American Psychological Association faculty mentor.
Raptor Research Foundation
Stephen R. Tully memorial Grant. One award of $500 to support student research and conservation of raptors.
Sigma Xi
Grants-in-Aid-of-Research. The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research.
Society for Research in Child Development
$3,500 plus $1,500 for faculty mentor to do a research project with a SRCD faculty mentor.
