Sir Victor Mascot
Sir Victor is Wartburg College’s official mascot, who you’ll see at sporting events, student activities, parades, alumni get-togethers and more! There’s no doubt his enthusiasm and school spirit has spurred Wartburg’s athletic programs to countless victories.

History & Auditions
Before Wartburg College settled permanently in Waverly in 1935, the school’s nickname wasn’t the Knights. Throughout Wartburg’s history, the nicknames of Teutons, Hilltoppers, Wartburgers, Spartans, and the Purple-and-Gold had been used. The colors of orange and black were brought from the Clinton, Iowa, location. Elmer Hertel, a biology professor and Wartburg’s first paid football coach, was the architect for the nickname change to the Knights.
The graduating class of 1953 purchased the first complete set of knight’s armor, which was made in Stuttgart, Germany. The armor was usually worn each year by the student body president in the Homecoming Parade. This armor is still used to lead the Homecoming Parade each year. Duane Schroeder ’58, longtime sports information director, named the knight mascot Sir Victor. The name Victor comes from the word “victory,” which is something Wartburg knows a lot about on the field, on stage, and in the classroom! The current mascot suit was developed in the early 2000s.

Tryouts
Do you have what it takes to fill the armor? Sir Victor tryouts are a fun-filled experience and a great way to show off your school spirit. Tryout to join the team as Sir Victor!
When: The majority of tryouts will be held in spring
Where: TBD
How Long: 20 minutes
What to Bring: Workout/running clothes to wear and a POSITIVE ATTITUDE
What will I do at tryouts?
1. Applicant should arrive at tryouts on time.
2. Applicant will complete a series of interview questions with individuals who work with Team Sir Victor. (Current Team Sir Victor members will not be present in order to keep their identity secret)
3. Immediately following each interview question, applicant will be asked to perform an action that Sir Victor would perform in the basic duties. This could include dancing to music or using props to develop a skit.
**Auditions are closed to the public. ONLY applicants and invited coaching staff, Wartburg athletic department and alumni office staff will be allowed inside.
Requirements
- Be a full-time student at Wartburg and have Knight fever 24/7
- Have and maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Be between 5’8” and 6’1” (due to suit restrictions for Sir Victor)
- Be comfortable stunting with the Knight cheerleaders
- Learn the Fight Song
- Be in good physical condition with good health
- Be good with kids (90% of Sir Victor’s fans are under the age of 12)
What Does Team Sir Victor Do?
- Attend and entertain at select Wartburg athletic events and other requested sporting events, such as away, in-state rival games, post season and tournament play
- Responsible for putting together improvisational skits for games
- Numerous community service events, paid appearances, miscellaneous events for Wartburg and its organizations
Being on Team Sir Victor IS a time commitment, but it IS extremely fun!
