Peer tutors and writing consultants are Wartburg students that have been successful in their departments and have a desire to help other students succeed. They are selected based on their demonstrated tutoring philosophy and must meet the following qualifications:

• Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Receive a faculty recommendation
• Earn an A or A- in the courses they wish to tutor

As successful students, peer tutors and writing consultants share their content knowledge, in-class experiences, and motivation to learn as they create a friendly, inclusive environment that fosters student-defined academic success.

What do tutors do?

Tutors support students by explaining course concepts, clarifying examples from lecture or your text, and providing their own perspective on how to be successful mastering the content. Tutors are expected to provide a peer perspective on the course, but do not serve as content experts in the same way your instructor will.

What subjects do we have tutoring for?

A list of supported courses is kept up to date on the Tutoring Bookings page. Subjects that typically have support available each term are: Accounting, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Math, and Music. 

Tutoring is course specific; if you do not see a course listed, please reach out to the Academic Success Coordinator responsible for tutoring services.

How much does tutoring cost?

Tutoring is free for all Wartburg students! There is no restriction on the amount of appointments you are able to receive tutoring or writing consultation for.

How can I prepare for a tutoring or writing session?

You will get the most out of your appointment if you book in advance and provide information in your booking about the course content you’d like to review. This will help your tutor prepare as well. Have the assignment instructions and class resources ready to go. You should be prepared to begin your appointment by sharing what you do know and then asking specific questions that support your tutor to know what you are hoping to accomplish in this appointment.

How do I reschedule or cancel a tutoring appointment?

Once you book an appointment, you will receive a confirmation email. Navigate to the bottom of that email and select “Manage my Booking” or “Reschedule this Appointment” to make adjustments. Making changes as soon as you are aware of conflicts allows other students the opportunity to use the resource.

How do I become a peer tutor or writing consultant?

Tutoring and writing consultation needs are typically identified at the beginning of each academic year and hired over the summer for a fall start. Positions will be posted on Handshake for students to view and apply. In term hiring may happen as needs arise.
