Britni Cohen-Wichner is a talented multi-instrumentalist who inspires those around her through her passion for music.
After graduating from Wartburg in 2019 with a degree in music education and music therapy, Cohen-Wichner became a music teacher in the Albany, Wis., school district. While there, she revitalized the band program, recruiting nearly three-fourths of eligible fifth and sixth grade students.
“Through her leadership, she instilled a sense of pride and commitment in her students,” wrote James Schwab, one of Cohen-Wichner’s nominators. “Beyond the classroom, she has been a compassionate and empathetic mentor. Her willingness to take the time to listen, counsel, and provide a caring presence has left an indelible mark on the lives of those she has touched.”
During her time at Albany, Cohen-Wichner had to adapt to the realities of the Covid-19 pandemic while also managing the duties of two full-time positions and hiring additional staff. Throughout it all, she continued to burnish both her musical talents — on clarinet, saxophone, violin, guitar, and piano — and her pedagogical skills.
“Her multifaceted approach to learning, encompassing both her musical endeavors and professional development as an educator, embodies the spirit of lifelong learning,” wrote Schwab.
Cohen-Wichner is now pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she performs in multiple ensembles and helps organize honor bands for younger musicians.
“I have worked with a great number of dedicated human beings who serve and care for those around them, and Britni is one of those people who stands out the most,” wrote Thomas Gamboa, another of her nominators. “I am incredibly proud of her professionalism and dedication to the students.”
For using music as a powerful tool to uplift and support others, the Wartburg College Alumni Board is pleased to present a 2025 Young Alumni Award to Britni Cohen-Wichner ’18.
