Wartburg student media bring home ICMA awards

More than 15 Wartburg College students were recently recognized for their work with student media at the annual Iowa College Media Association Awards.

In all, the students brought home 41 awards for work in print, video and audio. In addition to the individual achievements, KWAR, the college’s student-run radio station, received its third straight Overall Audio Excellence Award.

Landon Jepson, a junior from Williamsburg, received the Pat Pisarik Student Journalist of the Year award, a prestigious award given to an outstanding student journalist serving their collegiate media organizations over the previous calendar year. The award is named in honor of the late Pat Pisarek, a Loras College journalism professor who espoused the ideals of unbiased, public-focused journalism. The award also comes with a $500 prize.

The staff of Knight Vision, the college’s livestream network, received first and second place for Best News Programming and third place for Best Newscast. The KWAR and Knight Vision staff also received first place in Best Newscast for KV Sports.

Students earning honors include:

Lyla Pier-Atkinson received third place for Best Headline Writing.

Cyrah Isa-Mogoba received second place for Best Review and an honorable mention for Audio Feature Package.

Ali Parkhurst received first place for Best Staff Editorials, third place for Best Media Website and an honorable mention for Best Show (Entertainment).

Chloe Rehmert received first place for Best Staff Editorials and third place for Best Media Website.

Addison Wells received first place for Best Staff Editorials and third place for Best Media Website. She also received third place for Best Air or Podcast Personality for her show, “Inside Scoop,” on KWAR.

Rishita Gathala received third place for Best Graphic or Illustration.

Caleb Kammerer received second place for Best Show (Entertainment). He also received honorable mentions for Best Print/Online Sports Reporting and Best Sports Program.

Landon Jepson received first place for Best Video Sportscasting and second place for Best Audio Promo or PSA and Best Sports Program. He also received an honorable mention for Creative Audio and Long-Form Audio Package.

Jax Caddell received third place for Best Sports Program and an honorable mention for Best Video Sportscasting.

Zach Hiney received an honorable mention for Best Video Sportscasting.

Christopher Guerrero received second place for Best Air or Podcast Personality for his show, “Throwbacks Hit Harder,” and honorable mentions for Best Sports Broadcast and Long-Form Audio Package.

Makenna Kammerer received first place for Best Air or Podcast Personality for her show, “Finding Whimsy,” and second place for Best Audio Promo or PSA, Best Show (Entertainment) and Best Newscast.

Jace Holz received third place for Best Audio Promo or PSA and Long-Form Audio Package.

Hayden McCormac received second place for Best Show (Entertainment).

Alyson Hasner received third place for Best Show (Entertainment).

Lauren Simpson received an honorable mention for Best Show (Entertainment).

Kayden Johnson received an honorable mention for Best Sports Program.
