Richard D. Howie, DVM, 83, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, August 7, 2026, at Wesley on Grand Senior Living in Des Moines.
Richard was born March 23, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Vinton and Ruth (Hersom) Howie. He graduated from Manson High School in 1961, Wartburg College in 1965, and Iowa State University in 1970 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
Richard married Andrea Lynn Trost in 1966, and they later divorced.
He had been a resident of the Mount Pleasant community since 1971, where he owned and operated Henry County Veterinary Hospital. After 53 years of practicing veterinary medicine, Richard retired in 2023.
Richard was a beloved and respected member of the Mount Pleasant community. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Iowa Veterinary Association, and the Iowa Corn Growers Association. He also served on the Henry County Deputy Sheriff Civil Service Commission.
Richard is survived by his three children: Andrew (Kary) Howie of West Des Moines; Jonathan (Amy) Howie of Missoula, Montana; Katherine (Tony) Tober of Centennial, Colorado; eight grandchildren: Clayton, Christopher, Rebecca Howie, Lauren, Asher, Brooklyn Howie, William and Sophia Tober; and siblings: Steven Howie of Lincoln, Nebraska; William Howie of Manson, Iowa; Phillip Howie of St. Louis, Missouri and Linda Wilson of Ava, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Elizabeth Joy Howie.
