Reid Koenig ’75

Reid Allen Koenig, 73, of Austin, Texas, and Waverly, Iowa, unexpectedly passed away on June 9, 2026, at UnityPoint-Allen Hospital. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, and he will be deeply missed. Reid was born on April 11, 1953, in Decorah, Iowa, to Orville and Irene (Bachelder) Koenig. He graduated from Postville High School in 1971 and from Wartburg College in 1975. He got an MBA from the University of Northern Iowa in 1987. On May 31, 1975, he was united in marriage to Marsha (Gunderson). Together they had 3 daughters, twins Anne and Laura in 1978 and Jennifer in 1982.

Reid started out working at Pella Windows and Doors as a systems analyst. In 1980 he moved to John Deere Engine Works in Waterloo, Iowa, working in the information technology department. In 1983, he moved with his family to Waverly, Iowa, to start a long career at Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Company, later Century Companies of America, later CUNA Mutual (now TruStage). He started in IT and then transferred to customer service in 1989, and then became part of the corporate office in 1990. He retired as COO of the Waverly site in 2014. He enjoyed his job – especially managing and leading departmental growth, thinking through problems, and leading with an empathetic style.

Reid was actively involved in various community organizations in Waverly and the surrounding area, including the Waverly Utility Board, United Way Board, Chair of First Insurance Services, Cedar Valley Alliance, Chair of Waverly Small Business and Incubation Consultant, Region 7 Workforce Development Board, Chair of the Waverly Area Development Group, Wartburg’s Leadership Committee and their President’s Advisory Council, and at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He won the Waverly Chamber Community Service Award in 2007 and the Waverly Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Reid had many hobbies – from riding his motorcycle through the Iowa countryside in the summer to watching the Green Bay Packers and other sports teams throughout the year. He cheered for any team from any sport from Iowa or Texas. He loved traveling across the country, visiting friends and family and seeking out odd tourist attractions. He had golf, fishing, and card club friends, spending time on the links, the water, or around a table catching up with friends in the process. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle and reading. Although he sometimes listened more than he talked, he enjoyed gathering with others – whether that was with family vacations, gathering at a local bar or coffee shop, or even catching up on the phone while in Texas.

One of the greatest joys in Reid’s life was his family. He cherished his life partner and soulmate Marsha, including celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2025 with a family trip to Cancun. He was supportive and proud of his three daughters for their academic and life accomplishments. He moved part-time to Austin, TX, to be close to his two grandsons, Micah (born in 2012) and Oliver (born in 2015); along with teaching them to help with chores, he liked to ask questions about their life and watch sports and movies together. He frequently volunteered at their elementary school and never missed a concert or sports game.

Reid is survived by his wife, Marsha Koenig of Austin, TX; three daughters, Anne Koenig of San Diego, CA (married to Catherine Glass), Laura Koenig of Marshall, MN, and Jennifer Braham of Austin, TX (married to David Braham); two grandsons Micah and Oliver Braham of Austin, TX; bonus family members Nicole Lunde, Charlotte and Lorelei McCall, and Christopher Lunde (married to Kendall Henry) all of Buda, TX; sister Sally Conway of Cedar Falls; brothers Gale Koenig (married to Kathy Koenig) of Castalia and Lon Koenig of Castalia; as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Orville and Irene, brother Mark Koenig, and brother-in-law Pat Conway.
