Janet Ames Lockwood ’64

Janet Lockwood, 87, of Sheffield, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond.

Jan (Janet) Lockwood was born in Atlantic, Iowa, April 23, 1938. Parents were Wyman and Eva Ames. She graduated from Madrid High School in 1956, then Waldorf Junior College in Forest city in 1958. She taught elementary school in Clarion, North Polk and in Waverly. During those years, she attended classes at Drake University, then received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Wartburg College in Waverly. She was married in 1967, then widowed in 1969.

In 1974, she married Larry Lockwood and welcomed into her life Wendy, age 11, and Mark, age 8. They lived in Grundy Center until 1982. While there she did substitute teaching, and was active in the Lutheran Church women’s group, as well as Beta Sigma Phi social sorority, and American Association of University Women. In 1982, they moved to Sheffield where they ran the Lockwood Insurance Agency for 18 years. During those years, Jan was active in the Sheffield Community Club, Beautification Committee for the downtown and the F & S Study Club. Jan enjoyed reading, Iowa State sports, winters in Arizona, their seven grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and her dog Brandy.

Jan is survived by daughter, Wendy (Mike), Mark (Jodi), seven grandchildren – Mari, Aaron, and Cory Schramm, and John (Ashley), Peter (Eliza), Rebecca and Mary Lockwood, as well as three great grandchildren – Lily, Charlotte, and James. Proceeded in death by husband, Larry, her parents and three brothers. Memorial gifts may be given to Zion St. John Lutheran Church, West Fork Food pantry (both in Sheffield), or Humane Society of Mason City.
