Daryl Peter Buchholtz, age 90, formerly of Swaledale, IA residing at Highland Ridge Retirement Village in Williamsburg, Iowa, passed away on Monday, May 4th, 2026.
Daryl was born on the family farm in Monmouth, Iowa on February 6th, 1936, and grew up in Monmouth and Wyoming, IA. He was a graduate of Monmouth High School. He then went on to Wartburg College followed by the University of Northern Iowa. He got his teaching degree in 1958 and then moved to Manly, IA to teach science, physical education, coach baseball, and instruct drivers education.
In 1959, he married Darling Mae “Tootie” Peters, daughter of Louie & Reva Peters of Swaledale, IA at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton. The couple lived in Manly until 1965 when he left teaching to pursue his love of farming. He remained in Swaledale until moving closer to his children in 2022. Daryl also farmed wheat in northern Minnesota near Hallock in the Red River Valley, just south of the Canadian border. Daryl & Tootie employed many local farm hands to travel with them, and many memories were made with family and friends while up North. Daryl also had a farming operation in the Miami, Oklahoma area, where he farmed wheat and had a small amount of pecan trees. To move the operation during the farming season was quite the undertaking. His work didn’t stop there, as he had several other business ventures that kept him busy throughout the years.
Daryl enjoyed farming, golfing, coffee at all the local spots, going out to eat, and spending time with his family and friends. You could find him reading articles, newspapers, or current events; he was well spoken on many topics. Daryl enjoyed taking trips to see other parts of the USA with his brother and brother & sisters-in-law, as well as hosting hog roasts and parties in his shop. He also enjoyed attending all his grandkids’ activities, which ranged from running, playing ball, band, choir, and everything in between. He was the kind of grandpa that would do just about anything for his grandkids, even if their parents didn’t exactly approve. At the end of any event, you could count on him taking you out for dinner or ice cream to celebrate. Daryl was an active and faithful member of St. Paul Evangelical Church in Thornton, IA most of his life. He held several board positions at both the church and local golf course. He was humble, kind, and would help anyone.
Daryl is survived by his two children, Mike (Beth) Buchholtz of Williamsburg, and Pam (Dan) Goodyear of Monticello; seven grandchildren, Brett Walker, Dylan (Brittany Kemper), Levi (Kate Robinson), Jake, & Zada Buchholtz, and Olivia & Gabe Goodyear; and three great- grandchildren, Remington & Jaxon Buchholtz, and Corbin Kemper. Also surviving are a sister, Diane Carstensen, a brother-in-law, Ron Behr; sisters-in-law, Karen Peters & Nancy Peters; a special cousin, Harold (Yvonne) Wurst; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members.
He was proceeded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Tootie; his parents, Fred & Elsie Buchholtz; in-laws, Louie & Reva Peters; brother, Donald Buchholtz; sisters-in-law, Erlene Buchholtz, Mary Jane Rawson, & Beverly Behr; brothers-in-law, Mike Rawson, Donald Carstensen, & Gary Peters; and great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Buchholtz.
