As a collegiate tennis player, Lydia Miller understands the dedication it takes to succeed in the world of competitive sports. This summer, she’s exploring the other side of athletics as a United States Golf Association P.J. Boatwright Intern at the Northern Ohio Golf Association.
Throughout the summer, she will assist the association with social media management, photography and marketing initiatives, all skills she’s honed in the classroom and as a member of Wartburg’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter and the Tower Agency, the college’s student-run public relations firm.
“I’m excited to gain hands-on experience in several different areas while learning more about the business and marketing side of the golf industry,” said Miller, a graphic design and journalism and communication major from Claypool, Indiana.
The USGA internship program is designed for students and recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in golf administration through exposure to tournament preparations, tournament administration and post-tournament business. Miller, who hopes to pursue a career in the sports industry, learned of the opportunity through a LinkedIn contact.
“Networking played a huge role in helping me discover this opportunity, and it reinforced the importance of building professional relationships and staying engaged within the industry,” she said. “I know the sports industry can be very competitive, so being able to work directly within golf is an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to meet professionals in the field, learn from their experiences and continue building connections that could lead to future opportunities.”
Even though she’s a tennis player, Miller said she’s interested in golf because of the unique professional opportunities and experiences the industry offers.
“One of my long-term goals is to have a career that allows me to travel and connect with people,” she said. “I believe this internship will help me build valuable professional skills, expand my network and gain industry experience that will prepare me for a successful career after college.”
