Being a student-athlete helps you grow as a person

NAME: Kevin Duque
CLASS YEAR: 2022
HOMETOWN: Storm Lake
MAJOR: Biology

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT: Soccer and Dance Marathon

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WARTBURG: I wanted a small school for my education, and then I wanted to play soccer. So with the academic and althetic facilities, I thought it’d be cool to come to Wartburg.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE BIOLOGY PROGRAM: I visited campus on a STEM VIsit Day and got to see the Science Center and meet some professors. At Wartburg, it felt like the professors cared about me and they wanted me to succeed.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE SOCCER TEAM: Coach Madigan is a really nice guy, and he cares about his players and their education.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING ON THE SOCCER TEAM: Just being with all the guys. It’s always a good time whether we’re working out together or playing out on the field.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SOCCER MEMORUY: My freshman year, we went into a shoot out against Nebraska Wesleyan in the playoffs. That was a lot of fun and a thrilling experience.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN PLAYING SOCCER: I would say go for it. Being on the soccer team allows you to meet new people and helps you grow as a person. Playing a sport in college means that there is going to be more responsibilities and more stuff on your plate, but it helps you in the long run.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: I’d like to attend graduate school, whether it’s dental or medical school. My dream would be to go to the University of Iowa.

WHAT HAS MADE YOUR EXPERIENCE WORTH IT: The people. Everyone seems to care whether it’s professors or coaches. You can see it around campus with the event we had for racial injustice. Between the leaders on a team and the coaching staff we just decided that it’d be cool if we took action and did something that was bigger than us and that was a problem that needed to be addressed.
