David Cherwien, a renowned organist, composer and conductor, will lead a Homecoming & Family Weekend hymn sing Friday, Oct. 9, as part of Wartburg College’s monthly Bach’s Lunch series.
“Hymns We Love to Sing” will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Wartburg Chapel. Attendees are invited to bring a lunch to the Chapel Commons at noon for a recital talk. Hymn selections include “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee,” among others.
Cherwien was the artistic director of the National Lutheran Choir from 2001 to 2023. During that time, he also was the editor of the National Lutheran Choir Series of choral music published by Morningstar Music and produced many recordings, including the “Hymns We Love to Sing” series, which is available on iTunes and Spotify.
He also served as cantor of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis for more than two decades, continuing the tradition of creative hymn singing begun by his predecessors. Prior to that, Cherwien held church music positions in Chicago, Seattle, and Berlin, Germany. Recognized for his contributions to the field of church music and liturgy, he is often called upon to serve as clinician and hymn festival leader across the country.
“David Cherwien is a wonderfully creative and exceptionally talented leader of congregational song. He is known throughout the country for his hymn festivals and the way he embellishes texts through his accompaniments and elaborations on the organ,” said Karen Black, Rudi Inselmann Endowed Professor of Organ. “I am so excited that he is able to be part of our series this year.”
The series will continue Nov. 6, Feb. 12, March 5 and April 9.
