Four ensembles, hymn sing headline Wartburg music weekend

Clear your calendars, music lovers, because Wartburg College has a little something for everyone Oct. 9-11. As part of Homecoming & Family Weekend, the college’s four auditioned ensembles will offer their first concerts of the year, and the monthly Bach’s Lunch series will feature a program that encourages audience participation.

The music begins at noon Friday, Oct. 9, when David Cherwien, a renowned organist, composer and conductor, leads a traditional hymn sing as part of the college’s monthly Bach’s Lunch organ series. Attendees can bring a lunch to the Chapel Commons for a pre-recital talk, followed by the concert at 12:30 p.m. in Wartburg Chapel.

Saturday’s Homecoming festivities will wrap up with a 7 p.m. concert in Wartburg Chapel featuring Castle Singers and Kammerstreicher. The Castle Singers, under the direction of Brett Gregory, and Kammerstreicher, under the direction of Rebecca Nederheiser, will each play selections from their 2027 international tour repertoire before joining for Ola Gjeilo’s “The Ground” and Darlene Zschech’s “Shout to the Lord.”

On Sunday, the Wartburg Choir will give the community a sneak peek at music they will sing at the 2027 ACDA National Conference in Minneapolis in March when they perform at 2:30 p.m. in Wartburg Chapel. The ensemble’s ACDA program centers on the theme “Spirited Light”and was inspired by the writings of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th-century composer and mystic who described experiencing a divine radiance she called “a reflection of the living Light.”

At the conclusion of the choir concert, head over to Neumann Auditorium at 3:30 p.m. for the final event of Homecoming & Family Weekend: the first Wind Ensemble concert under the direction of Wartburg alumnus Duane Bierman. In addition to hearing great music, all Wartburg College Concert Band alumni will be invited to the join the band on stage for “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.”

All concerts are free and open to the community.
