History & Auditions
Before Wartburg College settled permanently in Waverly in 1935, the school’s nickname wasn’t the Knights. Throughout Wartburg’s history, the nicknames of Teutons, Hilltoppers, Wartburgers, Spartans, and the Purple-and-Gold had been used. The colors of orange and black were brought from the Clinton, Iowa, location. Elmer Hertel, a biology professor and Wartburg’s first paid football coach, was the architect for the nickname change to the Knights.
The graduating class of 1953 purchased the first complete set of knight’s armor, which was made in Stuttgart, Germany. The armor was usually worn each year by the student body president in the Homecoming Parade. This armor is still used to lead the Homecoming Parade each year. The first depiction of the knight mascot was illustrated by Robert Boetcher ‘61. Duane Schroeder ’58, longtime sports information director, named the knight mascot Sir Victor. The name Victor comes from the word “victory,” which is something Wartburg knows a lot about on the field, on stage, and in the classroom! The current mascot suit was developed in the early 2000s.

This includes creating or modifying artwork featuring Sir Victor.
Strategic Marketing & Communication is responsible for ensuring that use of Sir Victor aligns with Wartburg College’s brand standards, institutional identity and appropriate representation of the college. Unauthorized or unapproved use of the mascot name or likeness is not permitted.
- Official depictions: All depictions of Sir Victor must be created or approved by Strategic Marketing & Communication (SM&C), as Sir Victor is the official college mascot and is directly associated with the Wartburg brand.
- Not a logo: Illustrations of Sir Victor are not logos and may not be used in place of official Wartburg College institutional logos. When Sir Victor appears in a design, an official college logo or the Wartburg College name must also be prominently displayed on the garment or item.
- Uniforms: Sir Victor illustrations should not be used on athletic uniforms or other team uniforms, with the exception of ball caps. When Sir Victor is used on a ball cap, an official college logo must also appear on the cap.
- T-shirts and camp apparel: Sir Victor illustrations are best suited for t-shirts, camp apparel, team t-shirts and similar spirit-oriented items.
- Production considerations: Two versions of each custom Sir Victor illustration must be created to accommodate different production methods and sizes. For example, a small Sir Victor intended for embroidery on a ball cap should use a simplified design, while a larger version intended for screen printing on a t-shirt may include greater detail.
- Sport-specific illustrations: Only one stylized Sir Victor illustration will be developed for each sport that requests a sport-specific version.
- Other knight imagery: Other depictions of knights may be used in Wartburg College marketing and communications. Strategic Marketing & Communication will determine when and how these images are used to ensure they do not create confusion with the official Sir Victor mascot.
