Bibek Chand’s easygoing demeanor is a perfect match with his work in the often-thorny field of international relations.
“I knew Bibek before I really knew Bibek,” wrote Nnamdi Nelson, one of Chand’s nominators, “whom I initially mistook for a flight attendant due to his personable and upbeat demeanor.”
Chand’s easygoing nature served him well at Wartburg, where he was involved with the executive teams for the International Club, Students for Peace and Justice, and the Asian Student Association, commitments that reflected his interests in intercultural communication and multicultural initiatives.
“Although he was not a Christian, Bibek demonstrated deep understanding of Christian doctrines and was genuinely tolerant of the political, social, and religious views of other students — domestic and international,” wrote Nelson. “I especially enjoyed learning important virtues about Hinduism from Bibek.”
Since graduating from Wartburg in 2012 with a degree in international relations and political science, Chand earned a master’s degree in international studies and a doctorate in international relations, both from Florida International University. He now teaches at the University of North Georgia and serves as the adviser for the Model United Nations group there, helping students hone their diplomatic skills.
“His service is centered on student success and the all-rounded development of students to be world citizens committed to thriving in diverse environments,” wrote Nelson.
During his academic career, he has authored numerous essays, articles, and books and presented at a large number of conferences. His work is often focused on the geopolitics of his native Nepal.
For his promotion of intercultural communication and global awareness, the Wartburg College Alumni Board is pleased to present a 2025 Young Alumni Award to Bibek Chand ’12.
