The Wartburg Community Symphony will join the Cedar Falls High School String Ensemble on Thursday, March 26, for a free concert featuring “Peter and the Wolf,” a symphonic tale for children that appeals to all ages.
The 7:30 p.m. family-friendly program will showcase the new Cedar Falls High School Auditorium and open with several selections by the Metropolitan Brass, a Cedar Valley quintet featuring Scott Muntefering and Steve Tripolino on trumpet, Laurie Routt on French horn, Merlin Grady on trombone and Brett Copeland on tuba.
The Wartburg Community Symphony, conducted by Rebecca Nederhiser, and the Cedar Falls High School String Ensemble, directed by Sam Naumann, will then perform Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.”
“This well-known musical fairy tale tells the story of Peter, a brave boy who outsmarts a wolf with the help of his animal friends — a bird, a duck and a cat,” said Nederhiser. “Each character is represented by the sound of an instrument in the orchestra.”
Bob Westerman, a morning show host on The Mix radio station in Cedar Falls, will narrate the story.
“We are grateful to the McElroy Trust for providing funding for this collaborative concert,” Nederhiser said. “We hope it will attract people of all ages for an enjoyable 60 minutes of music.”
