The work of four Wartburg College students will be on display in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery April 9-May 23.
An opening reception Thursday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. will include an opportunity to meet the artists and hear more about their work. The reception is free and open to the community. The exhibit, “The Art of Being,” gathers works that illuminate the many textures of human existence by reflecting presence, identity and the beauty found in simply existing.
The artists, working under the direction of Marwa Elkashif, assistant professor of graphic design, produced the exhibit as a representation of the culmination of their Wartburg experience. The featured artists are:
- Henry Cooper, of Califon, N.J., who examines how human administrative systems attempt to resolve the reality of species loss by converting living creatures into sterile, categorized data points in “The Resolution of Loss.” The collection includes an immersive installation and conceptual 54-card deck.
- Katherine Dare, of North Carolina, who designed an immersive multimedia experience with oil paintings, stained glass jellyfish and bead work to create an underwater experience.
- Frida Figueroa, of Guatemala City, who created “Roots in Transit,” a collection of three large-scale pieces that delve into the themes of cultural identity, history, liberation and the immigrant experience.
- Anya Poggenklass, of Cedar Rapids, who created a three-piece multimedia installation that represents three types of synesthesia through coordinated sound, color, scent and touch, exploring themes of perception, neurodiversity and representation.
The Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery is in the Bachman Fine Arts Center on the edge of the Wartburg College campus. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, April 9-May 23. The gallery is open to the public and admission is free. Visitors may park without charge in the nearby F Lot.
