Olivia: Med school acceptance rate drew me in, experiences kept me engaged

What has been your favorite class: Pharmacology, Advanced Biochemistry, Human Cadaver. These were my favorites because of the course content and professors who taught them. They challenged and advanced my knowledge to know how the human body works biochemically and how medications and chemical agents interact with the human body. I also got to dissect a cadaver to see what the human body looks like inside. I knew that I wanted to go into medicine back was in high school, and these classes made me realize that I am one step closer to entering the medical field after my undergraduate education.

Why did you choose Wartburg: I chose Wartburg because I came from a rural small town. I was looking for a college that reminded me of home. I knew Wartburg has a great biology department, and the success rate for medical school applicants was 82%. I would be noticed, have more opportunities, and make more connections for my future. As I reflect on my last year here, I am so thankful that I chose this school to call my home. Although the years flew by, the relationships and memories that I made will never be replaced.

What was the most impactful experience you had at Wartburg: As a biology major there are plenty of opportunities that stand out on a medical school application. One of the most important was when my research with classmates and our mentor, Dr. Davidson, “Cynaropicrin inhibits pancreatic cancer cell viability and disrupts cellular redox homeostasis,” was published in Micropublication Biology.

What advice would you give to new students: You are going to learn so much through your four years here. You will fail some, pick yourself up, and grow some more. The thing about Wartburg that makes it so special is the people. Faculty and staff truly want nothing but the best for you. They are cheering you on, supporting you, and making sure you are on the right path toward success beyond graduation.

How would you describe Wartburg in three words: Connections, hardworking, authentic

What has been your favorite Wartburg experience: My favorite Wartburg experience was being an Orientation Leader for three years. The connections I have made with the first-years, faculty, and staff through Wartburg because of this job benefited me in the long run. I was a resource for students and faculty to depend on and represented Wartburg’s mission. This opened up an opportunity to be named one out six students on the committees that helped President Becky’s develop the 2030 strategic plan. This was an amazing opportunity to be a part of, and I am forever thankful that I got to work alongside President Becky.

What travel experience did you have while at Wartburg: I loved the Amazonian Ecology and Culture course because I was able to learn about Dr. Linnea Smith, who’s changed lives and started her own clinic in Peru. My study abroad trip entailed going to Peru, visiting the clinic, and exposing myself the Amazon’s culture. Medical mission trips are needed, and this is something I want to do in the future!
