My husband, Norman Marshall Scott, passed away quietly at 89 years on April 2, 2025, from a long battle with cancer. Norm was born in Waterloo, Iowa on July 12, 1935. Growing up Norm worked summers and weekends at John Dere.
Norm enjoyed playing golf with his grandparents where he learned the art of the game and integrity from them.
Norm received his Bachelor’s Degree at Wartburg College in Iowa before moving to California where he received his Master’s Degree at Cal State Long Beach and began his teaching career. Norm was a teacher for 47 years with a passion for teaching 4th and 5th graders. One year he had combined both classes where both students and parents worked with Norm to advance their education. He gave the students algebra math books, and they ended up passing 6th grade math without knowing they were a grade ahead. Norm taught the value of hard work, integrity and honesty and how they were the foundation for success. His students loved and respected Norm.
Golf was Norm’s second passion. He was the Ambassador Captain at our local course in Mission Viejo and he was the head coach for both the girls and boys golf teams at Mission Viejo High School for many years. He also founded Scott Junior Golf to help prepare 6–16-year-old golfers how to prepare and play in tournaments. For 10 years, young golfers would seek his expertise in playing golf. One of his students even went professional years later.
For most of Norm’s life, he was active in church activities and volunteered regularly. He was also an avid woodworker craftsman making many beautiful items he gifted over the years. Norm often mentioned how lucky and blessed by God he was to have had such a long and wonderful life.
Norm is survived by his wife, Pauline, his son Mike and daughter Kristie from a previous marriage, and four granddaughters: Casey, Aly, Amanda and Megan, along with five great grandchildren and one on the way.
Norm’s heart touched so many students with love and teaching over the years. His imprint on their lives will live on forever.
