Gerald Menning ‘51

Gerald J. Menning, 96, of Waterloo, and formerly of Waverly, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024, at his daughter’s home in Kaufman, Texas.

Gerald was born on May 28, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Alfred Carl and Della Agnes Geer. He was baptized in June 1928 in Milwaukee and confirmed in 1943 in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. Gerald graduated from the Oshkosh High School in 1947 and Wartburg College in Waverly in 1951. On April 4, 1953, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Griffey in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The couple made their home in Waverly, where Gerald worked for Meyers Shoe Store from 1953-1970, Thompson Shoe Store from 1970-1972 and then John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo from 1972 until he retired in July of 1991.

Gerald enjoyed watching television, working on his computer, listening to music from the 1930’s – 1950’s, traveling, and playing cards.

Gerald is survived by two sons, Gerald J. (Michiko) Menning Jr. and David Allen Menning, both of Waterloo; a daughter, Beverly Jane Menning of Kaufman, Texas; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann; a daughter, Shirley D. Menning; a granddaughter, Kristy Gilligan; his parents; two sisters, Betty J. Dahse and Marilyn Sass; a brother, Russell Menning; and niece, Charmaine Dahse Menning.
