Frederick Grawe Jr., age 77, of Waverly, Iowa, died Thursday, January 22, 2026, at New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Fred was born on November 4, 1948, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Frederick Sr. and Ruth (Burhow) Grawe. He was raised in Waverly and graduated from Waverly Shell Rock High School in 1967. He attended University of New Mexico for a year then transferred to Wartburg where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 1971. In 1968, Fred was united in marriage to Cathy Berry at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly, the couple would later divorce. Fred worked at the family-owned Waverly Independent/Democrat until the 1980’s when he settled in Clear Water, Florida, where he worked for Home Depot for twenty five years, before returning to Waverly in 2011.
Fred was inducted into the Wartburg Hall of Fame for basketball and Golf in 2017. He enjoyed sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. In his spare time, you could find Fred at the Waverly Golf and Country Club or at the Pour house which his son owns.
Fred’s memory is honored by: two children, Stephanie (Grawe) Foster and her husband, Marc of Solon, Iowa and David Grawe of Waverly; five grandchildren, Alexa (Reiley) Hanson and Matthew and Lauren Roeder and Aira and Oaken Foster; and two great-grandchildren, Kollyns and Krue Hanson. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Susan Johnson and Jane Grawe.
