James W. Liesener (Jim), born on April 29, 1933, in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at his home in Easton, Maryland, on May 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Edie; his daughter, Jennifer Liesener; granddaughter, Taylor Hilderbrand; and daughter-in-law, Melanie Liesener. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Jay Liesener, in 2017.
Jim met Edie at Wartburg College in Iowa. Jim completed his B.A. (Education, Psychology); Theological Studies; Teaching Credentail (Libray Science) and M.A. (Guidence and Counseling) from the University of Northern Iowa; A.M.L.S. and a Ph.D. (Library and Information Science) from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Liesener served as a respected professor in the College of Library and Information Services at the University of Maryland from 1967 until his retirement in 2001. Throughout his distinguished career, he contributed meaningfully to his field through teaching, publishing, and presenting workshops and lectures nationwide.
A lifelong learner, Jim found joy in researching any topic that piqued his interest—especially genealogy. He cherished quiet hours in his study, time spent with his family and friends, and the pursuit of knowledge. He often spoke of his deep beliefs in love, truth, and honesty, and he lived by those values every day. Above all, Jim was a man who loved deeply and gave selflessly to the people he held dear.
