Cheryl Anne Matthias, age 81, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2024. Born on June 23, 1943, in Oelwein, Iowa, to Soren and Vermilia Sorensen, Cheryl lived a life dedicated to education, counseling, and her family. Cheryl is survived by her loving husband, Robert Matthias; her children, Tanya (Ed Kennedy) Matthias and Brock (Nicole) Matthias; her grandchildren Owen, Kira, Soren, and Brody and her sister, Beverly Sorensen. Her family will forever cherish the memories of her warm smile, infectious laugh and compassionate nature. A lifelong learner and educator, Cheryl graduated from Wartburg College in Iowa with a degree in Education. She later earned her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, which set the foundation for her impactful career in education and counseling. For over three decades, Cheryl devoted herself to shaping young minds and guiding students through life’s challenges. She began her career as a physical education teacher before transitioning to the role of high school guidance counselor. She served as the Department Head of the Guidance Counseling Department at Manitowoc Lincoln High School in the latter part of her career. After retiring from the school system, Cheryl continued to make a difference in people’s lives through her work in private practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Cheryl’s impact on the Manitowoc community was far-reaching. She will be remembered by many in the community for her support and guidance during difficult times. Her ability to help others navigate life’s challenges left an indelible mark on countless individuals and families. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Cheryl found joy in watching and cheering on her children and grandchildren in their various sports endeavors. She also treasured travel and music, demonstrating her love for the performing arts through lead roles in productions such as Sound of Music and Guys and Dolls during her early adulthood. Cheryl’s zest for life, her dedication to helping others, and her laugh will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
