Betty DePuew Miller ’60

Betty Jean Miller, age 88, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Edward Philip and Lucille Isabell (Hurd) DePuew on October 4, 1937, in Butler County, Iowa. Betty graduated from Clarksville High School in 1956 and attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, for three years in elementary education.

On June 21, 1958, she married Ronald W. Miller, her sweetheart for six years, at Immanuel United Church of Christ by Reverand R.J. Topp. She was able to follow her dreams of farming and milking Holstein cows for fifty-five years beside Ron. I guess “once a farmer gal, always a farmer” fits Betty as after Ron passed, she continued to be involved in farming. She gives credit to the Heery-Murphy family for allowing them to follow their dreams.

Betty was an active member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. She served on the church council, helped with bible school, hospitality committee, memorial fund, and the fund-raising committee which was her passion.

She was den scout leader till all her sons reached Arrow of Light. Then she was a devoted 4-H mom till all her sons were out of high school. She supported her sons through their college education, as this was very important to her.

She liked to paint, decorate cakes, and spend time with Ron doing woodworking. She was very proud to be able to make all her sons their wedding cakes as well as her grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed doing things on the farm with her grand and great-grandchildren. It was her joy to watch them grow.

Betty died on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron of sixty-two years; a daughter, who died in infancy, Patricia Miller; her parents, Edward and Lucille DePuew; brother, Joe DePuew; sister, JoAnn Depuew, and sister-in-law, Mona DePuew.

Betty is survived by three sons, Paul (Karen) Miller of Clarksville, Alan (Laura) Miller of Chariton, Iowa, and Brian (Lynne) Miller of Pella, Iowa; five grandchildren, Cody (Emily) Miller, Caitlin (Josh) Sadler, Sean (Christina) Miller, Craig Miller, and Troy (Andrea) Miller; five great-grandchildren, Finley, Oscar and Milo Miller, and Watson and Wells Sadler; three brothers, William (Teresa) DePuew of Waverly, Jerry (Rose) DePuew of Clarksville, and Maynard (Barb) DePuew of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters-in-law, Lois DePuew of Fredericksburg and Marilyn Niehaus of Clarksville; and many nieces and nephews.
