Matthew J. Parmely, 60, of rural Hazleton, Iowa passed away Monday, April 20, 2026, at his home. Matthew John Parmely was born December 10, 1965, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of John Howard and Betty Lou (Coonrad) Parmely. He was raised on the family farm outside of Lamont. Matt graduated from Starmont High School in 1984 and then wrestled collegiately for four years at Wartburg and Cornell College. In 1989 Matt married Lesa Carrothers of Alburnett, and they raised their four children, Brooke, Jordan, Ryan, and Tanner on their farm near Hazleton. Matt loved to farm, hunt, fish, and drive around in his truck with his beloved dog, Waylon, but his greatest passion and thing he excelled at the most was coaching football and wrestling. Whether it was at the youth level or at the varsity level, Matt cared deeply for the athletes he encountered through the years, and he took great pride when his own boys participated in athletic events. Many of these former athletes have reached out to the family and have shared their deep gratitude for the impact that Matt had on their life. Matt is survived by his children, Brooke (Devin) Rausch of Oelwein, Ryan (Heather) Parmely of Hazleton, and Tanner Parmely of Hazleton; and by his four grandchildren, Harper, Jordy, Wrenley, and Cooper. He is also survived by his mother, Betty Parmely of Dundee; his brother, Greg (Jennifer) Parmely of Hazleton; his sister, Lamista (Dale) Meyer of Dundee; as well as several nieces and nephews and Lesa Parmely. He was preceded in death by his son, Jordan, and his father, John Parmely.
