Mary “Sue” Kern, 93, of Waverly, Iowa died on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.
Mary Adorine Kern was born on February 8, 1931, the daughter of James and Margaret (Reburn) Hitchins in South Bend, Indiana. She attended primary school in the New Albin area, then Iowa Teacher College (UNI) for two years where she received her teaching degree followed by Mt Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. She later went to Wartburg College, where she received her master’s degree. On June 1, 1957, she was united in marriage to Edward G. Kern at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin, Iowa. Mary taught school in New Albin, Elkader and then at Shell Rock elementary, retiring in 1990.
She was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church, DAR and National Education Association. Mary enjoyed traveling, reading, attending the performing arts and most especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors are her three daughters, Linda of Waverly, Denise (Bret) Bienemann of Waverly and Janet (Steve) Maricle of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Christopher Jones, Ben (Zina) Jenkins, Jessica (Brian) Boomer, Ashley (Douglas) Bruene, Katelyn (Davis) Ables, Ryleigh Bienemann and Nichollette Rider (Jay Jackson); 12 great grandchildren, Evan, Eli, Elleigh, Zoeigh, Adaleigh, Oliver, Norah, Charlette, Wesley, James, Olivia and Stella; brother, Don (Dorothy) Hitchins of New Albin and sister-in-law, Katherine Kern of Denver. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward on July 1, 2002, and two brothers, Bernard and Thomas Hitchins.
