Marianna Schutter King ’83

Marianna King of Waverly, Iowa passed away after a brief illness and one day of hospitalization from cardiopulmonary arrest at the Waverly Health Center, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the age of 81.

Marianna was born July 30, 1944, the daughter of Alyle A. and Helen (Lounsbury) Schutter, in a military hospital at Barksdale Field near Shreveport, LA where her father, an army chaplain, was in training. After WWII her family moved from Louisiana to New York to Michigan and back to New York, finally settling in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Marianna graduated from New Brunswick High School and then attended Douglas College and Hope College. She paused her college education to get married.

Marianna was married to Donald R. King on March 27, 1965, by her father in the Second Reformed Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey where Donald was a graduate student at Rutgers University. As newlyweds, Marianna and Donald lived in Minneapolis, MN while Donald was working on his PhD. Marianna worked part-time while Donald was in school. In 1967 Donald enlisted in the US Air Force during the Vietnam conflict, relocating them to Florida. During their time in Florida, they had two daughters: Christina (King) Loundy and Rebecca (King) Kaprich.

After Don’s four years in the Air Force, the family moved back to Minneapolis for Don to complete his PhD. During that time Marianna worked part-time at Wick’s Furniture. In 1975 the family moved to Decorah, IA. While in Decorah, Marianna was a secretary for the First United Methodist Church and a part-time student at Luther College where Donald taught biology. In 1979 the family moved to Waverly where Donald taught biology at Wartburg College. During the years in Waverly Marianna worked at Wartburg and for State Farm Insurance while attending Wartburg part-time to finish her degree in business, graduating in 1984. After graduating from Wartburg, she bought and managed Travel With Us, a travel agency, which was sold in 2000 when she retired.

Marianna was very busy outside of work serving on Waverly Planning and Zoning, the regional Girl Scout Council and the Bremwood Children’s Home Board. She was a member of AAUW, Wartburg Women and the Rotary and Lions clubs. She liked serving others and enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, reading and cooking. Most of all she enjoyed her family and friends.

Marianna was preceded in death by her parents, Alyle A. and Helen L. Schutter of Muskegon, Michigan. Survivors include her husband, Donald King, of Waverly; daughters, Christina Loundy (David) of Northbrook, Illinois and Rebecca Kaprich (John) of Ankeny, Iowa; grandsons Alex Loundy, Sam Loundy, Andrew Kaprich, Nathan Kaprich; her brother, Rev. Dr. William L. Schutter of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
