H. DeVere Creger of Waverly, Iowa passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the age of 95.
Hillis DeVere Creger was born November 7, 1930, the son of Hillis R. and Elna L. (French) Creger in Plainfield, Iowa. He graduated from Plainfield High School and then attended Wartburg College for two years. On March 25, 1951, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Eggleston at the Methodist Church in Waverly. DeVere worked for two years at Walker Motors as a bookkeeper and then as a general accounting manager at Koehring Cranes and Excavators (Terex) for 40 years until retiring in 1993. Following his retirement, he worked at Westendorf Auto and then at Benson’s Laundry. Many who knew DeVere will remember him for the devoted and loving care he gave tirelessly to his wife in her later years, committed to weathering her health issues together.
In years past, he was active in Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement and at Trinity United Methodist Church. DeVere enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with friends, golfing, bowling, reading, camping, yardwork, bird watching and keeping his cars clean. He was also a pretty darn good baker and helped others make 85 pies for the Methodist Church to serve when RAGBRAI came through Waverly. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a fabulous family historian to the end, with a memory as sharp as a tack and eagerly shared detailed stories from the past with kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews.
DeVere will be greatly missed by his surviving family which includes his daughter, Pam (Jerry) Gahr of Rolla, Missouri; two sons, Douglas (Rhynonda) Creger of Waverly and Steven (Kay) Creger of West Union; eight grandchildren, Andrea Lawson, Rebecca Southard, Marshall Creger, Cameron Creger, Nikki Schroeder, Jason Gahr, Daniele Fulgium, and Joshua Gahr; and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma Jean Creger; two brothers, Richard and Robert Creger and a sister, Frieda Avery.
