Matthew: Balancing school and military service

Categories: ,

Name: Matthew Tudor
Hometown: Independence, Iowa
Major: Journalism & Communication
Campus Activities: Salt Company, Castle Singers
Branch of Service: Iowa Army National Guard
Military Company and Location: 135th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, Camp Dodge

Why did you choose Wartburg: I chose Wartburg because of the journalism program, and I felt the college would give me the education and skills to be able to go out into the world and be a qualified journalist. I also valued the small campus, the community, and the music program.

Why did you join the military: I knew I was going to join from a young age. I wanted to serve my country and serve in a way that I would be able to do what I love and also protect those that I love. I joined the Iowa Army National Guard to be able to have my civilian life and pursue an education, while also taking the time to serve part-time and put on the uniform when needed. Another reason why I joined was because of my family’s rich history of those who served in a variety of branches on both sides of my family. I felt obligated to continue that legacy in my family.

How do you balance school work with your military duties: With my service being part-time, I find that I can do a really good job at working on my studies while at college and being able to serve diligently when I go to drill every month. I would also say working ahead in classes has really helped me to balance my time.

How do you navigate your activities with your busy schedule: Some of my other activities have had to be missed due to my need to be at drill. However, my unit has shown flexibility and allowed me to do bigger events, like Christmas with Wartburg. Rehearsals and practices have not really been touched by my time in service. I am grateful for my unit being able to show flexibility for my time in college at Wartburg.

Who at Wartburg has helped you succeed in college: My adviser, Dr. Penni Pier, has been someone on campus who has really strived to see me succeed in my academics. I am grateful for how she has given me so many great opportunities in the journalism field. I would also say my choir director, Dr. Nicki Toliver, always pushes me to be the best musician I can be and to shine light toward those who need it.

What are your plans after college: My plans post-graduation are to get a job with my current internship, the Waverly Newspapers, and either move to the Waverly or Cedar Falls area and be close to my church, Candeo Church. In terms of my service in the Iowa Army National Guard, I would like to continue to serve until I am able to retire in the military. I am currently deciding whether or not to take a break in service or not. But my desire is to continue to serve my country with as much strength and time as I can.
