Neave Trio - string group

The members of the Grammy-nominated Neave Trio are no strangers to Waverly. Now in their third year as visiting artists-in-residence at Wartburg College, they have performed for the Waverly Chamber Music Series and worked with area high school string students.

Praised for their “taut and vivid interpretations” (Gramophone) and “eloquent phrasing and deft control of textures” (The Strad), the trio will make its first appearance with the Wartburg Community Symphony on Saturday, Oct. 18, performing Robert Paterson’s “Triple Concerto,” which they commissioned and premiered in 2023.

The concert, part of the WCS “American Tapestries” season, will begin at 7 p.m. in Neumann Auditorium. Concertgoers are invited to come early for Conductor Rebecca Nederhiser’s 6 p.m. Beyond the Music conversation with the trio, which includes violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov and pianist Eri Nakamura.

“This season will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary through works that embrace the soundscapes of our nation,” said Nederhiser. “From the captivating images portrayed in Paterson’s ‘Triple Concerto’ to Aaron Copland’s ‘The Tender Land’ and ‘Fanfare for the Common Man,’ to Dvořák’s ‘New World Symphony,’ there will be something for everyone this year.”

Titled “The Ascent,” the Oct. 18 concert will open with Martin Gould’s “American Salute,” a powerful tribute to the American spirit built around the Civil War era tune “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.”

The audience will then ascend to majestic peaks in Symphony No. 2, “Mysterious Mountain,” by Alan Hovhaness, which is hailed by critics for its beauty, lush scoring and spiritual undercurrents. The concert will close with Neave Trio and the “Triple Concerto.”

Tickets are available at the door with cash, check, or credit card or online with credit card at www.wartburg.edu/symphony. Individual adult tickets are $20, and a season ticket to all four concerts costs $72, a 10 percent discount. Youth 18 and younger and Wartburg College students are admitted free.
