Self-Defense Training for Girls and Women
Participants must be at least 16.
This course was developed for women and will be taught in two two-hour sessions. You will learn simple, effective skills that may help you prevent and/or survive an assault. Participants will learn awareness, assertiveness, mind-set, safety strategies, and how to use simple, effective techniques to vulnerable areas of the body. The class will be taught by Frank Martinez, a Shinkyudo Karate Association Inc.-certified black belt karate instructor. No prerequisite training required. This is a great refresher for those with experience.
Wear comfortable clothes and socks — no shoes on mats.

Men’s Basketball League

Basketball Clinic
This clinic teaches young children the basic skills and concepts of basketball. Clinic teachers, normally Wartburg basketball players, will give kids a great opportunity to learn and advance their knowledge and skills. It is a great program for the young basketball player regardless of their previous experience.

Baby Sitter Training
Sponsored by Covenant Medical Center Women’s Center
Participants will learn to perform basic child care skills such as diapering and feeding, how to handle bedtime and discipline issues, plus care for common injuries and emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts, and bee stings. All materials will be provided.

Rock Climbing Program
Participants will learn the fundamentals all the way up to advanced climbing techniques. It is a great way to exercise, learn a new skill, and have fun. *No gear needed

Tumbling
This is a great program for kids who might one day be interested in gymnastics. It teaches basic tumbling movements and games incorporating those movements, as well as use of the balance beam.

This program introduces children to the art of shooting a basketball. Players will be trained in the basics and advance through the many ways to shoot and score.

Indoor Soccer
Boys and girls will enjoy playing indoor soccer in this program typically taught by Wartburg soccer players. Emphasis is on motor-skill development, encouraging team play, sportsmanship, and learning basic soccer rules. This program fills up fast so sign up early!

Start Smart Sports Development Program
Is your child ready for sports? Start Smart will help children prepare for organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Start Smart is an instructional program during which a parent/guardian works together with his or her child to learn the basic motor skills necessary for sports participation. Parent-child groups will rotate through various motor-skill stations like throwing, catching, and kicking. This is a great program to introduce different sports to your child. Sports skills introduced include baseball/softball, basketball, golf, volleyball, soccer, and many more!

Golf Clinic
This program, taught by Wartburg golfers, introduces kids to golf and develops the skills of more experienced golfers. Participants will utilize the indoor golf space at The W, learning basic swing and putting skills along with other golf fundamentals. Kids can bring their own clubs or use clubs provided by The W. Number of participants is limited, and the program filled up last year!

Volleyball Clinic
Sponsored by the Wartburg College Volleyball Team
This class will introduce volleyball fundamentals and skills. It will focus on individual player development, including passing, serving, hitting, and defense. Participants also will play some 3-on-3, 4-on-4, and 6-on-6 games. Players will be trained by current Wartburg volleyball athletes and have a chance to attend a Wartburg College spring volleyball practice.

NFL Flag Football
The program is an instructional league that teaches the basic fundamentals of flag football through team practices and games. The style of play is a 5-on-5 format, and teams will have distinct NFL uniforms. Participants will be required to wear mouth guards. Fee includes jersey and flags. Reduced Program Fees

Families or members of families are eligible for reduced program fees if they are currently receiving food stamps. Youth are eligible for reduced fees if they receive reduced-price or free hot lunches through the school lunch program. Participants may recieve half off community recreation programs after verification of assistance is submitted. Some program exclusions may apply.

Participants will need to provide verification of assistance. Due to privacy laws, The W does not verify assistance with schools or federal/state agencies. A letter is mailed or emailed to each family receiving free or reduced lunches at the beginning of each school year. A copy of this letter may be submitted to qualify for the reduced fee. Other proof of assistance, including a food stamp letter of eligibility,  may be submitted to qualify for the reduced fees. For more information, please call 319-352-8716. 

Outdoor Explorers

To learn more about activities or to register for any Outdoor Explorers events, please go to the Bremer County Conservation Board website. Outdoor Explorer field trips include Heery Woods, Twin Ponds, and Rockford Fossil Park. Bremer County Conservation naturalists will lead all groups. You can download a registration form/liability waiver from the website.
