Marilyn Stoltz Isakson ‘69

Marilyn Isakson, 84, of Colwell, passed away peacefully at home November 28, 2024, where she was cared for by her loving family.

Marilyn Kay (Stoltz) Isakson was born in Clarion, Iowa on October 19, 1940 to Roy Elmer Stoltz and Lillian Margaret (Shediwy) Stoltz. She received her education in schools in Palo Alto County, Iowa graduating in 1958 from Graettinger Community Schools. She attended Junior College in Emmetsburg and received an associate degree in Elementary Education. She later earned a BSE in Elementary Education from Wartburg College.

Marilyn married Leon Allen Isakson on August 6, 1960 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Graettinger, łowa by Pastor H. Irving Peterson. Leon and Marilyn were blessed with two children: Rhonda and Lon. In 1967, they purchased a small farm near Colwell, Iowa where the family has resided ever since.

Marilyn was extremely proud of being an elementary school teacher. She taught for 39 years including Osage and Floyd; however, majority of her time was spent teaching 2nd grade in Charles City at Washington Elementary.

Nearing the time of her retirement, she took up quilting. Her love for sewing and creating beautiful artwork kept her busy for HOURS! She would talk at great lengths about the fabric she needed, which pattern she was using, and who she was making it for. She lived for her shop hops and an occasional quilt trip allowing her to travel to places she normally would not have seen. It was because of her love for quilting and America that she volunteered for Quilts of Valor. She enjoyed making and gifting these to the well-deserved, selfless men and women.

Marilyn was known for her gentle, kind soul. She spent many hours walking with anyone willing to tag along; however, over time, most of her family refused as they could not keep up with her and she refused to slow down. Marilyn found joy in the simple things like hearing birds sing and looking at flowers on her walks. She enjoyed spending time with people and made friends wherever she went. Over the years, she volunteered for a number of Boards and organizations, participated in the Circle at church, attended book club as she found great pleasure getting “lost” in a book, Colwell Culture Club and truly enjoyed sewing and celebrating with the local ladies at the Colwell Community Center.

Marilyn loved Leon and cherished every moment they had together. She had great love for family no matter how distant they were in relation or location. Above all else, Marilyn loved her Lord and Savior.

Marilyn Kay Isakson is survived by a loving and supportive family; daughter, Rhonda (Gale) Dana of Cedar Falls and their three daughters: Abigail VanGelder, Ashley (Josh) Northness (great grandchildren: Jade and Jax), and Alexandra Dana (Zach Girres); son, Lon (Kimberly) Isakson of Colwell and their three children: Zachary (Morgan) Isakson (great grandchild: Layton), Taylor Isakson, and Dylan (Amber) Isakson; sisters-in-law, Joyce King of Estherville, Iowa and Floy Irwin of Council Bluffs, Iowa; she was blessed with several nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
