Education department set me up for success

NAME: Michelle Ankrum
CLASS YEAR: 2020
HOMETOWN: Marshalltown, Iowa
MAJORS: Elementary education

INVOLVEMENT ON CAMPUS: Hope Overflow, Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry, Child Care at the W

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WARTBURG: I really wanted to feel at home and not be seen as just a number. I loved the small class sizes and the relationships you can build with your professors.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON YOUR MAJOR: Growing up I had some great teachers, and I had some teachers I really wish they did more. I want to be that positive influence on students. The one thing about the education department that is important to me is that we’re all family. They created such a welcoming community that now there’s no place I would rather be.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: I’m hoping to teach at a small, local school in the Cedar Valley so I can stay close to Wartburg.

HOW DID WARTBURG PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR NEXT STEP: I feel like Wartburg has provided me with so many additional opportunities than I ever would have gotten anywhere else. Especially with the education department, I had over 150 hours in the classroom before my student teaching placement. I also always felt that I knew who I could turn to if I needed any additional help.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WARTBURG MEMORY: My favorite Wartburg memory would have to be the 2019 reading conference that we host for local third grade students.

WHY IS WARTBURG WORTH IT: The community that Wartburg has created has made such an impact on my life. I came in as a shy kid who barely talked, and I was able to become a successful teacher.
