Job shadow opportunity helped her find her vocation

NAME: Mallory Leisure
CLASS YEAR: 2023
HOMETOWN: Clear Lake
MAJOR: Chemistry (pre-dentistry)

INVOLVEMENT ON CAMPUS: Orientation staff, St. Elizabeth Chorale, TriBeta, Dance Marathon

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WARTBURG: I came here for Meistersinger All-State camp in high school, and I’ve just always loved it. This is a familiar campus and I’ve been on it all throughout high school, and when I came here for an actual tour, I just knew that it would be a second home.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE CHEMISTRY: I had a job shadow with a dentist who earned her undergraduate degree at Wartburg. She told me about how great the program was, how good of an education she got, and how she was able to have one-on-one time with the professors. After having those conversations with her, I knew that it would be a good fit for me as well.

WHAT DREW YOU TO JOIN THE ORIENTATION STAFF: I wanted to be a friendly face on campus who people aren’t afraid to go up to and be able to talk to about anything and everything. I also want to be able to lend a helping hand and that I may not have all the answers, but I may know someone who does. I figured that I could use my outgoing personality and use it as a strength to welcome freshmen to campus.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST THIS YEAR: I’m excited to see how we as a community are going to actually come together and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to try and stay on campus and do in-person classes as long as we can. I’m looking forward to seeing the professors again and being back on campus.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE INCOMING FIRST-YEARS: If you want to know something or if you have a question just ask it and don’t worry about feeling “dumb.” Everybody wants to help you and help answer your questions or at least refer you to people who do have answers and that’s awesome.

WHY IS WARTBURG WORTH IT: All of it. I love Wartburg, and I just think the people are great, the professors and awesome, and they’re willing to help give you the one-on-one time and feel like a person rather than being just a number. I really enjoy being able to walk around campus and say hello to everyone that I see. I’m also able to be involved in so much on campus and at a bigger school you’re not able to get that kind of involvement. I just love everything about it here.
