Makenzie Thorson

Wartburg prepared me to be a leader

NAME: Makenzie Thorson

CLASS YEAR: 2018

HOMETOWN: Lake Mills, Iowa

MAJOR: Graphic design

INVOLVEMENT ON CAMPUS: Wartburg track and field athlete, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WARTBURG: What first drew me into visiting Wartburg was my interest in the college’s track and field team, which has now given me a second family and life lessons that will stay with me forever. On my first visit I fell in love with everything about Wartburg, from the small class sizes to the facilities to the faculty and students I met and the endless opportunities that Wartburg had to offer me.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU NEVER IMAGINED YOU WOULD DO BEFORE COMING TO WARTBURG: I never imagined that I would be a track and field athlete and be as academically successful as I am. In high school, I struggled with testing and school and had a B average GPA. Now at Wartburg I have had several difficult classes but have finished several semesters with a 4.0 and will hopefully graduate with a 3.8 or higher while being an athlete all four years, and I am really proud of that.

DID YOU COMPLETE ANY INTERNSHIPS: I completed internships at the Waverly Chamber of Commerce and the Iowa Student Learning Institute, a nonprofit founded by fellow Wartburg student Ian Coon ’19.

HOW ARE YOU LIVING OUT THE WARTBURG MISSION: Wartburg has prepared me to be the best leader I can be with everything I do and has taught me the importance of service and how great it feels to know you are helping others. At Wartburg I have had many chances to learn more about my faith, and I believe I will be graduating with a stronger Lutheran faith.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: I will be moving back to my hometown and working as a graphic designer at a marketing agency called Coloff Digital. I hope to get the opportunity to spend time with family and friends, travel, and continue to find my passions.

WHY WAS WARTBURG WORTH IT: The last four years have been worth it, because I have meet many lifelong friends, received a great education, and will be leaving with countless memories.
