I found my voice at Wartburg

NAME: Kelly Preussner

MAJOR: Business Administration

OCCUPATION: Assistant director of academic support, Duke University Athletics

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WARTBURG: I grew up in a very small town (500), so I knew that I would want to go to a small school. Originally when I decided to come to Wartburg over Luther it was for the sciences. I was very impressed with the sciences and felt like that was what my career path was going to be. It didn’t end up that way, and I am thankful that I was at a place where I was able to explore and find something that did fit me the best.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WARTBURG TRADITION: I love May Term! I went on a couple trips during May Term, and they were my favorite classes — obviously because they included a trip!

HOW DID YOUR WARTBURG EXPERIENCE PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE AFTER COLLEGE: I think Wartburg gave me a very broad lens to experience the world. I didn’t know I would gain that going to a small school, but after I left I was really ready to spread my wings and that gave me confidence going forward. The interaction necessary with professors, advisers, employees on campus, etc., is something that made me more confident after I left Wartburg.

WHY WAS WARTBURG WORTH IT: Oh my, the list goes on! I really developed into a leader and found my voice during those four years. The campus community was the supportive environment that I needed. I don’t know that I needed it coming in, but fall of my junior year I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and when my life could have fallen apart, my professors and friends were there to support me through it, especially those first few days!

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS: Explore everything and keep an open mind! Follow your passion, what you are good at and enjoy. I see too many students major in and take classes in things they don’t like only because they think it will lead to more money in the future.
