Musical experiences made Wartburg ‘Worth It’

Christopher Kurt

NAME: Christopher Kurt

CLASS YEAR: 2014

MAJOR: Vocal music education

CURRENT EMPLOYMENT: 6-8 vocal music teacher, Lawrence (Kansas) Public Schools

WHY WARTBURG: The second I stepped on campus for my visit, it felt like home. That was the No. 1 priority for me. I wanted a college where I would want to come back and visit years after my education was done. Once a Knight, always a Knight.

WHY WAS YOUR WARTBURG EXPERIENCE WORTH IT: My musical experiences made Wartburg worth it. I traveled to Europe twice with the Wartburg Choir, student taught with a national-award-winning choir, and created lifelong friendships with members of all campus ensembles.

HOW DID YOUR WARTBURG EXPERIENCE PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE AFTER COLLEGE: In order to be successful in life, you have to have community. Wartburg prepared me to not only thrive in my future communities, but also to have great pride in them.

HOW DO YOU STAY CONNECTED TO THE COLLEGE: Being 6 hours away from the college, I can’t always be present. But, watching games and performances on Knight Vision, communicating with faculty via social media, and getting the alumni emails keep me connected to Wartburg.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU NEVER IMAGINED YOU WOULD DO BEFORE COMING TO WARTBURG: Sing in The White House. I’ll always remember that.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS: College is like a buffet: Try all sorts of new stuff. Some of it might not be good, some of it will be grand, but it will all teach you something!
