Rigorous academics, athletics brought me to Wartburg

NAME: Blake Meyer
HOMETOWN: Sumner, Iowa
MAJOR: Computer science

INVOLVEMENT ON CAMPUS: Wrestling, Student Athlete Advisory Committee

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WARTBURG: Growing up close to Waverly, I had known about Wartburg for a long time. There were lots of influential people in my life who attended Wartburg before me, including former coaches and my older brother. Lastly, Wartburg was the best place for me to continue my wrestling career while still getting a great education.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON YOUR MAJOR: I took an engineering course in high school where I was introduced to computer programming. Writing code was very interesting to me, so I decided to continue learning about it by becoming a computer science major.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: I am working at CUNA Mutual Group in Waverly as a software application developer. I would also like to begin my coaching career in the area.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS: In five years, I see myself still living in Northeast Iowa and developing software. I hope to be able to give back to the school and wrestling team that helped shape who I am today.

HOW DID WARTBURG PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR NEXT STEP: Wartburg prepared me for the next step by challenging me to do my best in school, athletics, and my relationships. It was these challenges that helped me develop as a person and prepare me for the future.

DID YOU DO ANY INTERNSHIPS AT WARTBURG: I had internships during the summers of 2017 and 2018 at CUNA Mutual Group where I was an application development intern.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MENTORS ON CAMPUS: All of my coaches on the wrestling team, as well as the MCSP faculty, have played a big role in my success while at Wartburg. They were all willing to help when I needed it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WARTBURG MEMORY: Meeting some of my best friends and competing as part of a national championship wrestling team.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT CAMPUS LIFE: Living in the same room as my best friends or only being a short walk away from everything.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS: Give your best effort in your schoolwork, and make sure to save time to do the things you enjoy.

WHY WAS WARTBURG WORTH IT: Wartburg is worth it because of all the opportunities I had to be involved on campus. I was able to build a strong network of friends and mentors that I can rely on for anything in the future.
