WAVERLY, Iowa — Renowned pop/jazz singer Suede will perform at Wartburg College on Saturday, Oct. 19, as part of the college’s Homecoming & Family Weekend festivities.

Suede, a 1979 graduate of Wartburg, has played everywhere from intimate jazz clubs like Birdland to grand venues like the Kennedy Center, sharing the stage with artists including Sarah McLachlan, Melissa Etheridge and Janis Ian.

Her sharp wit earned Suede a spot opening for legendary comic Joan Rivers, and her deep musical talent — she plays trumpet, guitar, and piano too — landed her a PBS special, “Suede, Live at Scullers Jazz Club.” A New York critic once described her as “Adele meets Diana Krall meets Bette Midler — sassy, smooth and intoxicating.”

“To go from college coffeehouses to playing world tours … well, it’s heady stuff to bring back to Waverly all these years later. I’m humbled and grateful that so many have believed in me so completely for so long — and are still here!” said Suede. “There’s going to be a lot of powerful energy on stage. To share it with two of the college’s great musical groups makes it a divine full circle for me.”

For the concert, Suede will be accompanied by two Wartburg student ensembles, the vocal jazz group Castle Singers and Kammerstreicher, a strings group.

“Suede has been a joy to collaborate with since the moment we started planning the concert,” said Rebecca Nederhiser, Kammerstreicher’s director. “Partnerships such as these are at the core of Wartburg’s liberal arts mission, demonstrating to students the continued power of music in our society today. We are grateful!”

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show in Neumann Auditorium are $40 for premium seating, $25 for general admission and free for Wartburg students with ID. Doors will open at 7 p.m.; tickets can be purchased at www.wartburg.edu/suede.
