The Wartburg Community Symphony Orchestra will offer a holiday concert Sunday, Dec. 9, in Neumann Auditorium on the Wartburg College campus.

The 3 p.m. concert will be followed by a reception and all visitors are welcome to visit the college’s Festival of Trees, located in the Classroom Technology Center, just down the hall from the Neumann Auditorium lobby.

The first half of the concert will commemorate the work of two 20th-century composers: Lili Boulanger and Leonard Bernstein. Boulanger, who died in 1918 at the age of 24, was an ascendant French composer known for her colorful music, while Bernstein is recognized as one of the most influential American musicians in history. The symphony will perform two of Boulanger’s tone poems and a suite of tunes from Bernstein’s “West Side Story.”

The show will conclude with Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” featuring young dancers from local studios.

“We are excited to collaborate again this year with local dance studios in presenting this concert,” said Jacob Tews, Wartburg College Symphony Orchestra director. “It’s a great opportunity for the young dancers to perform with live music, and a great opportunity for our orchestra to work on an iconic piece. The Tchaikovsky really pairs well with the vibrant music on the first half.”

Tickets are available at www.wartburg.edu/symphony or at the door for $16.50 for adults and $6.50 for students. Children 5 years and younger are free. Wartburg College students are admitted free with their student IDs. For ticket information, call 319-352-8691 or 800-772-2085, ext 8691, or email wcs@wartburg.edu.
