An exhibition featuring the work of Barbara Walton, an Iowa State University professor of art and visual culture, will open Feb. 19, at Wartburg College’s Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery.

“Waxing Poetic: The Journey of an Accidental Scientist” will be on display through April 1. A gallery talk will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, with a reception following from 6 to 8 p.m.

In “Waxing Poetic” Walton showcases her expertise and knowledge of several waxes for utilization in encaustic painting, including beeswax, microcrystalline wax and soy wax, which is an experimental wax she developed with an Iowa State colleague.

“This unique collaboration with scientist Dr. Toni Wang has provided an interesting intersection between art and science to discuss with the greater audience at our colleges and university and beyond,” Walton said.

Walton earned a Master of Fine Arts from Drake University and has exhibited throughout the nation.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The gallery, in Bachman Fine Arts Center, is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
