The sound quality in Wartburg College’s Neumann Auditorium is undergoing a transformation with the installation of a first-of-its-kind virtual acoustic system.

The Transcend Active Acoustic System, created by the Wenger Corporation, will transform the auditorium into a multipurpose venue capable of hosting more diverse performances and events by optimizing the sound quality for each performance. The upgrades are expected to be complete by Aug. 1.

“I couldn’t be more excited for the Transcend system because it allows conductors to change the acoustics for the specific needs of each performing group,” said Lee Nelson, associate professor of music and Patricia R. Zahn Chair in Choral Conducting. “It also allows conductors to program a greater variety of repertoire that was simply not feasible until now.”

The installation was made possible by a gift from Lindley and Joanne Jones of Waverly, along with support from additional donors.

“As Waverly residents and enthusiastic supporters of Wartburg College and its music and performing arts programs, we are excited about this opportunity to enhance and improve the experience in Neumann, as well as the additional benefits this system will bring to Wartburg and our community,” said Joanne Jones, a 1969 Wartburg graduate.

Wartburg will serve as a beta site for the product, which will bring high-profile acoustical consultants and music faculty interested in the virtual acoustic system to campus. Nelson expects the upgrade also will serve as a powerful recruiting tool for students and faculty.

“I am eager to show off the new technology to the thousands of students who come to Wartburg's campus each year for camps and festivals,” Nelson said.
“I believe high school directors and their ensembles will be drawn to the college to experience the Transcend system.”

The gifts were given in support of the college’s $75 million Transforming Tomorrow campaign as part of the $5 million Waverly appeal. The Joneses, along with Mike and Darcy Byl and Dave and Peggy Rathe, are co-chairs of the community appeal.

The Transforming Tomorrow campaign includes $37 million for scholarships, $14 million for infrastructure and technology improvements, $16 million for academic and support programs and $8 million for the annual fund.
