The Wartburg community can help launch Gov. Terry Branstad’s Healthiest State Initiative by participating in the Start Somewhere Walk Friday, Oct. 7.

The walk is the first step in Branstad’s campaign to make Iowa the healthiest state by 2016. Iowa is currently ranked No. 19. The governor is urging everyone in Iowa to take 12 minutes Friday to walk one kilometer at noon.

Wartburg College’s Start Somewhere Walk will be a 7.5-block route on campus that begins at the east entrance of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center. The official start time is noon, but walk hours are listed as 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.

The Hoover Fieldhouse and Track in The W will be the rain site.

“Let’s have some fun and start here at Wartburg,” said Dawn Wiegmann, RN, director of wellness and health promotions. “Let’s show our pride and walk to support the healthiest state initiative.”

Wiegmann urged walkers to log onto and register their participation.

Wartburg’s walk will be one of 10 in Waverly. More than 100 walks have been scheduled throughout the state. Branstad hopes 250,000 will be walking.
