Housing & Classroom Information
Students live in fully-furnished apartments owned
by the college (285 S. Lincoln St., Denver, 80209). Students are responsible for their own meals, and costs can range from $1,000-2,000 depending on their eating habits. The apartments
are located in the city in a safe neighborhood near two modes of
public transportation and numerous shopping venues. Major cultural
and entertainment centers are easily accessible. Classes are held at Grant Ave. United Methodist Church and Community Center,
216 S. Grant, just two blocks east of the Wartburg apartment building. Residence Life works with students attending Wartburg West Fall Term to ensure an efficient process for Winter Term housing on campus. If students have housing concerns, please contact Wes Brooks, Director of Residence Life at wes.brooks@wartburg.edu.
Fitness at Wartburg West
Denver Parks & Recreation centers have a variety of equipment, courts, classes, and pools with very good facilities. Students can purchase a four-month membership or pay-as-you-go. Closest to the Warburg apartments: Washington Park Recreation Center, 701 S. Franklin, 303-698-4962. For more information: www.denvergov.org/recreation Chris Winter, Strength & Conditioning Coach, has offered to provide a training program for any athletes attending Wartburg West.
Transportation
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Denver. Many students choose to bring cars to Denver, although that isn't necessary. The apartment building is very close to both the bus and light rail lines, and limited parking is available approximately three blocks from the student apartments. Students who bring a car should budget for parking ($10 per month located at a parking lot made available to students) and gas costs (depending on the distance to their internship).
History
of the Program
Wartburg College established
the Wartburg West program in the fall of 1985. Goals of the program
were to provide field placements for career exploration or community
service and opportunities to experience and study urban life and
issues.
In the spring of 1991,
the Bocks were appointed co-directors of the Wartburg West Program.
In 1998, May Term and summer opportunities were added to the Wartburg
West program.
An active and supportive
network of Wartburg College alumni/ae and friends in the Denver
area have been instrumental to the success of the program.
