The chapel architecture
integrates Wartburg's German heritage and its Iowa roots. The exterior
design, influenced by European churches, is carried out through
extensive use of Anamosa limestone quarried at Stone City, Iowa.
Close inspection reveals geodes imbedded in the stone throughout
the structure. The unusual roof, which weighs 40 tons, consists
of large concrete shingles, each weighing 13 pounds and held in
place with copper nails.
