Be Orange

OrangeMove

OrangeMove
Move-in and move-out days create large amounts of unnecessary waste for colleges across the country. In an effort to reduce the amount of waste that is produced at the beginning and end of the year and to prevent gently used items from being taken to the landfill, OrangeMove was created. OrangeMove is a program that educates students on how to move-in and out of their college residential hall sustainably. Whether you are on your way in or out these helpful tips will help you be more green.

  • Wrap breakables in clothing or used newspaper instead of bubble wrap. This will help reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste that is created on move in days.
  • Pack your belongings in reusable bags, totes, or previously used boxes. At move out time the bookstore provides some very strong boxes for student use.

OrangeMove-In
Prior to returning to campus in the fall, Wartburg students are educated on how to move into their residential halls sustainably. During move-in days volunteers reduce the amount of space cardboard takes up in the cardboard recycling areas by cutting down boxes. Other Move-in tips include:

  • When purchasing appliances, look for the energy star label. These appliances have been certified by the US government to have superior energy efficiency.
  • Talk to your roommate(s). For items that can be shared between your room or suite, save yourself money and space and only bring one.
  • Bring a plant! Plants not only make your room or suite feel more like home, they also keep the air fresh.
  • Pack reusable containers and utensils. Bring a reusable water bottle or coffee mug to use around campus. Discounts are offered at Wartburg Dining locations for students who bring their own container!
  • When you are finished unpacking make sure to break down your boxes and place them in a “cardboard only” dumpster.

OrangeMove-Out
End of the year move out collections began in 2008 and were formally known as OrangeMove May Term 2011. Donation stations are located in each residential hall’s lounge the last week of winter semester and May term. Students can donate unwanted, gently used items from their room by placing items in designated areas within each lounge. At the end of the week, volunteers pick-up and deliver collected items from the residential halls to local thrift stores. Items that students cannot donate can be recycled at each residential hall’s recycling station.

Other ideas for things that you can do in and around Waverly:

  • Geocaching - Go treasure hunting around Waverly with a GPS!  Find interesting places you have always seen but never looked at.
  • Letterboxing - Similar to geocaching, letterboxing gets you out and about in your community looking for hidden “treasure”, but no GPS required!
  • Rent from Crawdaddy Outdoors - There is no need to go out and purchase the supplies to geocache, kayak, and do other activities.  Rent from Crawdaddy’s and check out the activities they offer.
  • Biking and Hiking the town and the trails - The trails, streets, and sidewalks of Waverly and the surrounding areas give plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors every day.  For more information, check out the Waverly Rail Trail website.
  • Cedar Bend - With more than 4 miles of trails, space for camping, and plenty to do for yourself or the whole family, Cedar Bend, just outside of Waverly, offers the perfect location to enjoy the outdoors.
  • Waverly Pool - Though only available during the summer, it is a good thing to keep in mind when the heat comes back again next year! When it's cold outside, don't forget to use the natatorium at The W.

You don’t have to go outside to enjoy yourself, either!  The following options offer great fun for the individual or the entire family all year round.

  • Waverly Public Library
  • Wartburg Waverly Wellness Center
  • Palace Theatre
  • Waverly Bowl Inn

Still stumped?  You will find a lot of the same information listed above, but the following link gives you access to information on the various parks, trails, golf courses, and more that are available in Waverly.

Also, Waverly’s calendar has a lot of unique options, many of which have to do with the outdoors and the arts!
