Building Ties: Use of Life Reviews with Elders
Faculty Sponsors: Dr. Susan Vallem, Professor of Social Work and Dr. Tammy Faux, Assistant Professor of Social Work

Presented at the Baccalaureate Social Work Directors Conference, Los Angeles, Cal. Conducting a life history review gave many students one of their first opportunities to work closely with the elderly, while others had previous experience. Within feedback regarding proposals for future changes, most suggestions centered upon organizational issues. Completing life history reviews can be viewed as a success by both residents and students. Residents shared all positive comments and had nothing negative to say. On a scale from 1 to 4 where 1 was strongly disagree, 2 was disagree, 3 was agree, and 4 was strongly disagree, students rated an average of 3.04166 that the project was beneficial to their education in working with the elderly. Using the same scale, students rated an average of 3.0833 that they would recommend continuing the project in the future. Conducting life history reviews met all of its purposes of helping students to develop interviewing and assessment skills and of leading both residents and students to feel affirmed through the sharing of life stories.

Partners in Service & Learning: Building Collaborative Relationships Between College & Aging Network Programs
Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Lynn Peters, Associate Professor of Social Work

Association for Gerontology in Higher Education Annual Meeting

College and university social work programs are well-positioned to provide valuable assistance to Area Agencies on Aging and Senior Centers in developing and supporting much-needed programs and resources. Aging Network agencies, in turn, can provide unique opportunities for student learning and faculty service. This presentation featured an academic partnership project created through the collaborative efforts of the Wartburg College Social Work Program, the Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging, and the Waverly Senior Citizens' Center and explored the potential for similar partnerships throughout the Aging Network.
