Social Work Field Education

Social work students complete a minimum of two field experiences which total 590 hours and 4 academic course credits. The beginning field experience is completed during May Term; this placement provides students with full-time working experience in a social service agency.

Students also complete a semester-long Senior Practicum; this practicum gives further experience working in the profession as well as direct work with diverse populations.

An optional intermediate field experience, usually completed May Term of a student's junior year, is also available for students to gain additional experience. For field experiences, students are encouraged to explore working in various areas of social work of interest to them and with diverse populations.

Field experiences can be completed in a wide range of social service agencies throughout the US. Employers and graduate schools look for students who have hands-on social work or social work related experience working with various populations. Field experiences provide students with over 600 hours of social service experience.
