RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT GRADUATES ENTER SEMINARY

Once again this year, several graduates of the Religion and Philosophy Department have decided to enter into seminary in order to pursue careers in ministry.

Katie Pedelty, Jenna Miner, and Scot Roser will begin their studies in September at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.

Julie Scheibel elected to attend Gettysburg Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Beau Nelson, also graduated in May. Nelson, a non-traditional student, simultaneously completed his last year at Wartburg and his first year at Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. He and his wife Lydia (Posselt) Nelson, will return to the M.Div. program at Luther in September.

Lisa Hassenstab named Associate Director of Public Policy for Lutheran health and human service network

March 17, 2008 – Washington, DC – Lutheran Services in America (LSA) has named Lisa Hassenstab as Associate Director of Public Policy effective March 17, 2008.

Lisa M. Carr, Senior Director of Public Policy for LSA, said, “We are very excited to have someone so versed in the Lutheran network of caring join our staff. Her experience on the ground in government and church relations will help us reach out both to policy-makers and to grass-roots advocates interested in change.”

Ms. Hassenstab had been Associate Director of Church and Government Relations for Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. She holds a Master’s degree in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago, a Master’s degree in Theology from The Lutheran School of Theology, and a Bachelor’s degree in religion from Wartburg College.

Ms. Hassenstab will work out of the Washington, DC office of Lutheran Services in America.

Lutheran Services in America creates opportunities with people in thousands of communities throughout the United States and the Caribbean as an alliance of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, and their nearly 300 health and human service organizations. Working neighbor to neighbor through services in health care, aging and disability supports, community development, housing, and child and family strengthening, these organizations together touch the lives of one in 50 Americans each year.

Student Updates:
Jeanette Bidne '07 is the first ever graduate with a Worship Studies minor. She will attend Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN this fall with a full tuition Leadership Scholarship.

Andrea Christian '07 plans to attend Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in Gettysburg, PA in the fall.

Lydia-Ann Ford '07 plans to attend the Theological Semianry at Philadelphia in the fall.

Jessi LeClear '09 presented a paper, “Latino Religious Life in Waterloo, IA” at the regional American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature meeting at Luther Seminary on April 13.

Beau D. Nelson '08 will attend Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN this fall as the first student to participate in the new the Accelerated Dual Degree program between Wartburg College and Wartburg and Luther Seminaries .

Katie Pals '07 will attend Wartburg Theological Seminary in the fall.

Lynnea Walker '07 will be moving to China on July 30th to teach English on behalf of the ELCA.

Jake Kohlhaas '05, a student in the MA program at Catholic Theological Union in Hyde Park, Chicago, has recently been accepted into the prestigious Bernardian program. Named in honor of the late Cardinal Bernardian, Kohlhaas' acceptance includes a scholarship covering his entire tuition.

Alex Feldt '06 is completing his masters work in philosophy in Scotland and will soon return to the U.S. to begin a Ph.D. program in philosophy at the University of Oklahoma, (Norman OK).

Strydom Ordination

Amy (Severson) Strydom (1997) was ordained as a pastor of the E.L.C.A. Sunday, October 22 at her home congregation of Cambridge Lutheran in Cambridge, Minnesota. Among attendees and participants were Wartburg College alumni and faculty. Shown here [left to right] Elise (Watson) Forward (1998) and her daughter Hannah Catherine, Bishop Steven Ullestad (1975), Rev. Amy Strydom (1997), Rev. Ramona Bouzard, and Dr. Chip Bouzard. Pastor Strydom will serve Grace Lutheran Church and St. John’s Lutheran, Crane Creek, both in Tripoli, Iowa.

Sally Mitchell Ordination

Sally Mitchell (2002) was ordained as a pastor of the E.L.C.A. Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the Loehe Chapel, Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque. Liz Albertson Ordination

Elizabeth (Liz) Albertson (2000) was ordained as a pastor of the E.L.C.A. on Sunday June 25, 2006 at Zion Lutheran Church in Olewein, Iowa. Among the attendees and participants were Wartburg faculty, staff, and alumni. Among them are Dr. Fred Strickert, Bishop Steve Ullestad (1975) N.E. Iowa Synod, Liz Albertson, Dr. Chip Bouzard, Rev. Ramona Bouzard, Rev. Kristin Wendland (2000), Ettrick, Wisconsin, Rev. Howard Wolfgram (1951), Maynard, Iowa. Rev. Albertson will serve as pastor of North Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, Ettrick, Wisconsin.
