Sept. 25 - Judy Shepard
Shepard is executive director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
She lost her son, Matthew, in a 1998 murder motivated by anti-gay
hate. She works to educate audiences about acceptance of diverse
persons, prevention of hate crime, and respect for everyone.

Oct. 9 - Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor Convocation
This convocation recognizes the faculty who hold endowed chairs
and distinguished professorships and the individuals who, through
their gifts, make these special faculty appointments possible.
Dr. Peter Nash will receive the Franklin I. and Irene Saemann
Chair in World Communities, Dr. Daniel Walther will receive
the Distinguished Professorship in German History, provided
through a gift by Dr. Gerald Kleinfeld, and Dr. Shawn Ellerbroek
will receive the Otto Distinguished Professorship. |
Thursday,
Oct. 18 - Henry Lozano
President George W. Bush named Henry C. Lozano to be Deputy
Assistant to the President and Director of USA Freedom Corps
in Sept. of 2007, which was established to build on the countless
acts of service, sacrifice, and generosity that followed September
the 11th, 2001. Mr. Lozano
served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Californians
for Drug-Free Youth, a non-profit organization working to bring
parents, youth, schools, and communities together to create
and support safe and healthy communities. From 2003 until this
year, Mr. Lozano served as a member of the Board of Directors
for the Corporation for National and Community Service. |

Nov. 6 - Doris “Granny D” Haddock
Political activist “Granny D” walked across the
country at age 89 to lobby for campaign finance reform and create
awareness about the influence of money and wealth in the election
process. |

Nov. 13 - Beth Lewis - Corporation Education
Day
President and CEO of Augsburg Fortress Publishers, Lewis will
focus on the topic of change management. This convocation will
take place in the McCaskey Lyceum of the Saemann Student Center.
The business department's advisory board will be meeting afterward. |

Feb. 5 – Rev. Dr. Renita Weems
Weems is a theologian and author who speaks on issues of religion,
gender, race, and sexuality. She is founder of Something Within,
a consulting service providing guidance for women of faith interested
in connecting with their inner wisdom and balancing faith with
work and their vocations. |
Tuesday,
March 18 - Greg Mortenson
Author of New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea,
Mortenson is founder and director of the Central Asia Institute.
This nonprofit organization provides educational opportunities
for children, especially girls, in Pakistan and Afghanistan,
by building schools in remote villages. Mortenson’s book
is the 2007-08 Wartburg Readings in Common selection. |

April 8 - Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship Convocation
The recipient of the John O. Chellevold Student Award for
Excellence in Teaching and Professional Service will speak
at this event, which also recognizes student scholarship and
undergraduate research.
